Tax audit in Morocco: the 10 points that the inspector checks as a priority (and how to prepare for them)

You will receive a verification notice by registered letter. You have 15 days to prepare your documents. Stress sets in: is my accounting reliable? Have I made mistakes without knowing it?

At C2M, we support Moroccan companies on a daily basis in preparing and securing their accounting in the face of tax audits.

Above all, it is important to demystify tax audits. The tax inspector does not initially look for complex arrangements or international fraud. It focuses first on simple inconsistencies, visible anomalies — in short, elements that “don’t add up.”

Here are the 10 critical points that any auditor examines as a priority. By mastering them, you considerably reduce your risk of recovery.

1. The credit union (the mistake to absolutely avoid)

In accounting, a cash register can never be negative. If your cash balance shows -5,000 DH, this means that you have used undeclared funds to cover expenses.

👉 Consequence: immediate rejection of accounting.

2. The gap between physical stock and theoretical stock

The inspector can compare your actual stock to that declared.
Example: 50 units in physical stock versus 200 declared.

👉 Missing units are considered sold without invoice, therefore taxable (VAT + IS), with penalties.

3. Breaks in invoice numbering

A sequence like: Invoice 101, 103… where did 102 go?

👉 A “gap” in the numbering may indicate a concealment of turnover.

4. Non-deductible expenses (personal expenses)

Personal car tires, shopping, family trips…
These expenses have no place in the company's accounts.

👉 They will be reinstated in your taxable profit.

5. Consistency between VAT and turnover

If you declare 1,000,000 DH of turnover excluding VAT, the administration expects around 200,000 DH of VAT (rate of 20%).

👉 A significant deviation automatically triggers checks.

6. “Failing” suppliers

Some suppliers issue false invoices. The administration has watch lists.

👉 If a supplier is non-compliant (invalid ICE, questionable activity), the charge is rejected.

7. Current accounts of debtor partners

Using company funds for personal expenses is prohibited.

👉 These amounts can be reclassified as dividends and taxed (with penalties).

8. Abnormally low margins

If your margin is significantly lower than the market, this immediately attracts attention.

👉 This may indicate unreported sales.

9. Undeclared salaries

A high turnover with few or no declared employees?

👉 The administration will suspect informal work.

10. Lack of supporting documents

An untraceable invoice = a non-deductible expense.

👉 Without proof, you lose the right to deduction (VAT + depreciation).

Conclusion: the key is anticipation

A tax audit cannot be prepared at the last minute. It is prepared all year round.

At C2M, we note that the best organized companies are also those which pass tax audits without difficulty.

Well-kept, clear and structured accounting is your best protection. It's like a clean house: when someone shows up unexpectedly, you have nothing to hide.
